Activities
Mikkeli Centre of Photography´s aim is to introduce versatile sides of visual culture and photography. We have mainly focused on exhibitions by contemporary Finnish art photographers. Mikkeli Society of Art Photography is the board of the Centre. The Centre is funded by Ministry of Education and Culture and the City of Mikkeli. The exhibition season is from May until October.
The Centre has produced own exhibitions from the year 1993. Most mentinable ones are GRIN. Humour in Finnish Photography (2002–2003), Illustrators of the Ordinary - Six Finnish Photojournalists (2005), The Magic of 3-D Photography (2007), Lyrical Garden (2008) ja Ikiliikkuja - Newspaper Länsi-Savo 120 years (2009).
The Centre has published two books: Virne - Humour in Finnish Photography (2003), Stereovalokuvan taika - The Magic of 3-D Photography (2007) in collabaration with The Publishing House Musta Taide and The Finnish Museum of Photography. The Centre launched it's own publication series in the autmn of 2011.
The Centre has organized education for amateurs and pros from the very beginning, lately concentrating on digital photography. The Centre has a Digital Workshop for artistic work.
